Edinburgh Fringe 2024 is here! And so is our annual features series. This year, it’s all about REVELATIONS: the gossip, the mysteries, the spies and the moles. Because everyone knows you can’t keep a secret at Edinburgh Fringe…

Paulina Lenoir is making her Edinburgh Fringe debut with Puella Eterna, who has a complex beauty routine everyone’s been asking about.

By Paulina Lenoir

I begin my day by ending my sleep. Every end is a beginning.

As I emerge from my slumber I reach with my right arm for my love potion. I keep it by my bedside. Love is a complex blend of ingredients and to get it right you need the correct amount of longing, melancholy and bliss. I take it all with a single grain of Himalayan salt.

I then slide off my silky bed sheets straight into my slippers and wrap myself in a long, red robe. At this point my eyes remain closed. I am not yet ready to part with my dreams. I walk down my stairs with my eyes still shut, training my awareness of space one step at a time.

I then immerse myself in water. I love water. I let water drip onto my head and body to wash away the demons I attracted in the night. The ritual is called “showering”, invented by a stove maker from London called William Feetham, who thought standing under running water was a better idea than putting yourself inside of it.

After my watering, I air dry. I like to let my body absorb any remaining moisture and allow the rest to evaporate naturally. When I am fully dry I open my eyes for the first time. I soak in my surroundings and prepare to look into the mirror.

The first look in the mirror is important. I try to approach the mirror from the side so as to not frighten it. Mirrors are more fragile than we think. I usually let my nose lead the way. My nose is my guide because it knows. Now I am face to face with myself. It's important to face yourself every day.

Then begins my facial decoration process:

Step 1: I powder my nose with a thin layer of moon dust. Moon dust can be hard to come by but let's just say I am friendly with some astronauts…

Step 2: I apply a thin layer of cosmic egg white to protect me from the limelight. If I am performing that evening I’ll add a tiny bit of spot cream to my third eye to avoid startling it with the spotlight.

Step 3: To attain my signature red lip I go rose hunting. This island is full of roses but finding the right shade of red can be tricky. It is necessary that this rose is wild therefore this often requires a little venture outside of the city. Once I find the correct rose I simply make love to it. The rouge lasts for 12 hours.

Step 4: I like to add a layer of gloss on top made out of fermented tears of heart broken organic fed, free range men. Where possible it's good to keep things natural. The glimmer attained is subtle but effective.

Step 5: The final touch is blush. I opt for a naturally occurring blush. I find laughter gives the best shade of pink.

Kiss, kiss, kiss and kiss again xxx
